A winter storm watch means conditions may develop into a significant winter-weather event. It is a signal to prepare and follow updates, not a guarantee that a particular amount of snow will fall at your address.
This is an explainer, not a live warning bulletin. For your location, read the current National Weather Service alert and its issue and expiry times.
A watch and a warning have different purposes
The NWS winter alert guide distinguishes watches, warnings and advisories. Local criteria matter; a threshold used in one region should not be presented as a universal national rule.
A watch communicates potential while important details may remain uncertain. A warning concerns an expected or occurring hazard under the relevant criteria. An advisory can still describe disruptive or hazardous conditions. Do not treat the categories as permission to ignore the lower one.
Read the whole alert
Identify the area, valid period and hazards. Snow, ice, wind and travel impacts can require different preparations. A county-level alert is not a precise forecast for every street within it.
The winter preparation checklist focuses on actions once an alert is relevant to you. Keeping that task separate avoids repeating the same definition without helping readers decide what to do.
Forecast uncertainty is part of the information
A range or probability conveys more than an isolated high-end number. Read the legend and valid period before sharing a map. Our NYC snowfall forecast guide explains why the most dramatic scenario is not necessarily the expected outcome.
An old screenshot can look current after it has been reposted. Check the source and time rather than infer urgency from the colour of a graphic.
Plan around official local advice
Review travel, power and communication needs before conditions worsen. Our outage-map guide explains the limits of restoration estimates, which are another kind of forecast rather than a guarantee.
If attending an event, use official cancellation or postponement information. The weather and sport guide separates event safety from tactical discussion.
Keep following updates until the relevant period has passed. A watch can be revised, replaced or cancelled as evidence changes. That is part of forecasting, not proof that the original alert was meaningless.
