The IPL began as a BCCI competition, with Lalit Modi playing a leading role in its creation and launch. Giving him that credit does not require treating the league as the work of one person. Franchise owners, players, broadcasters, administrators and venue staff all had parts in making the tournament happen.
The first season began on 18 April 2008. A contemporary announcement about the official IPL website records the launch period and the partnership with the BCCI and league. It offers a useful dated source instead of hindsight about an inevitable success.
What was the organising idea?
The league put city-based franchises into a short-format competition containing Indian and overseas players. A fan could follow a local team while watching international opponents become teammates. That combination helped distinguish the IPL from a national-team tournament.
The commercial arrangement also mattered. Tickets, sponsorship, media distribution and team identity were part of the product surrounding the cricket. Our IPL revenue guide explains those categories without assuming all franchises earn the same amount.
What did the opening season establish?
The inaugural competition supplied both an attention-grabbing opening match and a first champion. Brendon McCullum’s unbeaten 158 for Kolkata became an early reference point; Rajasthan Royals finished the season as winners. Our 2008 season guide looks at those events separately.
An impressive debut does not by itself explain every later change in cricket. Claims about audience growth, player earnings or calendar power need their own dates and evidence. The origin story is stronger when it separates the initial design from outcomes that developed over many seasons.
How to read the history fairly
Avoid invented boardroom conversations, supposed private motives or quotations without an identifiable source. Explain who made a decision, when it happened and what the record establishes. Where an account is interpretation, label it as such.
For examples of how memories attach to particular matches, see selected IPL moments. The league’s history is a sequence of decisions and games, not a promise that every expensive sporting venture will follow the same path.
