Renee Good, 37, was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. This article is a dated account of the shooting and the investigation’s initial arrangements, rather than a claim to provide every later development.
Federal officials described the shooting as self-defence. Local officials disputed that account. MPR’s January 8 reporting records the disagreement and the subsequent dispute over state investigators’ access to evidence.
The early investigation changed
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension initially expected to investigate alongside the FBI. In its statement reproduced by the Fillmore County Journal, the BCA said it was later told the FBI would lead alone and state investigators would lack access to necessary materials and interviews.
The BCA said it withdrew because it could not meet its investigative standards without that access. That is the agency’s dated account. The original page’s broad assertion that multiple agencies were jointly investigating obscured this change.
Evidence and interpretation
Video can help establish a sequence, but camera angle, timing, audio and events outside the frame matter. A responsible account should distinguish what footage visibly shows from a witness’s interpretation and an official justification.
This page does not determine criminal liability or declare that a particular official account has been judicially proved. A later filing or finding would need to be identified by its own date and scope.
Keep political reactions in context
The death prompted public criticism, including Mark Ruffalo’s January 11 red-carpet protest. A protest is part of the response to the event, not a substitute for the investigative record.
